In New York City, there are countless classes developed for young children.  Parents are faced with choosing from the wide variety that the city has to offer- music, art, gym, swimming, language, dance, science, yoga, theatre, cooking, sign language, and more!  How do you decide what classes to take?

The best way to start is by taking a trial class or a drop-in class to see your child’s response to each program.  If a trial or drop-in isn’t available, stop by the location to see the space in person and meet the staff before signing up!

One of our favorite classical pieces to play in our music classes is Aquarium by Camille Saint-Saens.  Aquarium is the 7th Movement of Saint-Saens’ Suite Carnival of the Animals.  Our students love dancing to the soothing melody and shimmering glissando of the piece.

This building, on the corner of Bleecker and Christopher streets in downtown Manhattan has a very important place in New York City’s history.  The building was constructed in 1802 and is one of the oldest buildings in Greenwich Village!   It was the office of John Randal Jr., the surveyor and chief engineer for New York City’s street commissioners.  Randell designed the street grid plan of Manhattan in this building between the years of 1807 and 1809!  He completed the plan in 1811.  To view the map and read about The Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, click here.

Last year, The New York Times wrote an interesting article about John Randal Jr., how he surveyed Manhattan, and the perception of his work at the time.  (He was arrested, sued and “pelted with artichokes and cabbages”!)   Click here to read the story on www.nytimes.com.

Scroll below to view pictures of 329 Bleecker Street.  We love how this 2-story house stands the test of time as its surroundings evolve throughout the years!

We put together a list of great works of art to share with young children.  The list includes artwork from Picasso, Chagall, Dali, Rousseau, Van Gogh, Monet, Kandinsky, and more!   Give your children the full experience of appreciating artwork by asking engaging questions about each painting that you view.  Experiencing art is entirely subjective so you’re sure to be fascinated by what your children see.  We’ve included sample questions for each piece to help you get your children talking and thinking about art.  Click on the paintings to view them larger!

Check the locations of the paintings listed below so you can see the artwork in person if it’s in your area.  New Yorkers- several of these paintings are at the MOMA, the Guggenheim, and the Met.  Make sure to get out there with your children to see them up close!

Happy Birthday, Felix Mendelssohn!

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was born in Hamburg, Germany on February 3, 1809.  One of our favorite compositions by Mendelssohn is his Song Without Words, Op. 109 for cello and piano.  Watch this captivating performance of the piece by phenomenal cellist Jacqueline Du Pré, accompanied by her mother, Iris Du Pré.

We are neat freaks when it comes to our music studio and playroom.  To prevent germs from lingering or spreading, we’re always cleaning throughout the day as children come and go.  This is why it’s extremely important that our cleaning products are non-toxic and effective!  We put together a list of our 5 favorite cleaning products for cleaning toys and places where your children play.

1.  The Cleaner Upper by Babyganics

From the Babyganics site:

They play with their food but put the toys in their mouth. It’s a baby’s world. You just live in it (and hopefully keep it clean and safe). Grab The Cleaner Upper and your job’s pretty much done. No grime, no toxic chemicals left behind-you’re good to go from high to low. Let the games begin!
