Project 96 was started by one of my best friends, Ryan McCarthy.  He’s like a brother to me and I’m so proud of him for taking on this ambitious challenge so I wanted to share it with you!  Ryan started training and competing in marathons a couple years ago and has decided to put his growing mileage towards an amazing cause: fighting Juvenile Dermatomyositis, a rare and incurable auto-immune disease that affects as few as 2-4 children out of a million.   In particular, the project will benefit an adorable 6 year old girl named Keira Jzyk, who is suffering from JDM.

Here’s some information about the disease from the Cure JM Foundation:

(George Washington Bridge, NYC)

Last night, I returned from a week of relaxation with friends and family.  I love the feeling of driving down the West Side Highway with the windows down on a summer night!  I always feel home when I see the lights of the George Washington Bridge!

I took this picture before leaving for vacation!  What a gorgeous end-of-summer glow.

I’m heading to the beach for the week so I decided to do a post dedicated to old, nostalgic photos from New York beaches.  Can you imagine wearing these “swimsuits”? Those dresses must have been so hot and heavy!

Henry and the Hot Air Balloon (Music Classes): I finally finished my curriculum, “Henry and the Hot Air Balloon”, for TLB’s Fall music classes and am so excited to kick off the school year with this diverse program!  Our music classes follow a theme that changes every 4 months.  This theme’s concept is that we’ll be “flying” to a new country each week in class, meeting its music, culture, landscape, and animals.  Kids will listen to songs in different languages and be introduced to a full orchestra of classical instruments and a variety of world folk instruments.   The great part is that we target goals in each developmental phase as they’re simply having fun making music!  Some of the countries we’ll visit throughout the session:  Brazil, Nigeria, Austria, France, Australia, Russia, Mexico and Argentina.  Classes are available for kids ages 4 months – 6 years. Schedule/Registration Info

I ♥ Broadway: This drama class is for kids ages ages 4-6. It’s taught by our amazingly talented Playroom director, Chad. Students learn the plot and history of Broadway musicals in addition to choreography, singing, and acting! Schedule/Registration Info

Hip Hop 101 with Princess Superstar: Princess Superstar is a renowned rapper and DJ who has played in over 20 countries and worked with amazing musicians and producers! She’s designed a class for kids ages 3-6 and it is so much fun. Students learn about Hip Hop’s origins, write lyrics, practice rapping, dance, freestyle, learn slang and create beats with percussion instruments. I wrote about this class in detail here. Schedule/Registration Info

Let’s Gogh Art: Let’s Gogh Art offers mobile classes around the city and we’re excited to be hosting two of theirs this Fall. Munchkins and Masterpieces introduces students ages 2.5 – 4 years to works by great artists and uses their style as inspiration for unique art projects. Let’s Gogh Dance (ages 2.5-4) incorporates movement and story into this creative art class. Schedule/Registration Info

All classes are held on the Upper East Side at:

TLB Music
266 East 78th Street
(between 2nd and 3rd)
New York, NY 10075

Katia and I dropped off one of TLB’s saxophones yesterday for repair at a place we’ve been going to for years, Jon Baltimore Music on 46th street. This place is amazing- I highly recommend it for NYC musicians! It is full of saxophones, trumpets, tubas, clarinets, bassoons, violins and much more. Everyone who works there is friendly and welcoming, down to the resident cat, Bruce.

I made this amazing Vegan Potato Salad with Dill, Shallot, and Peas for the 4th of July and haven’t stopped thinking about it since! I normally don’t even like potato salad so this creation surprised me. I’ll be going on vacation next week (finally!), and I think this recipe will be the perfect addition for an end-of-summer cookout.

{Debussy at the piano, 1893}

Today is French composer Claude Debussy’s birthday.  He was born on August 22, 1862 and is one of my favorite classical composers. We often feature his compositions in our kids music classes at TLB.  When I saw today’s Goodle Doodle dedicated to him, it reminded me of the perfect video to share in his honor!  The video below is created by Steven Malinowski’s “music animation machine” and is set to Debussy’s Arabesque No. 1, one of the most beautiful, soothing pieces of music written for piano. Last August, I shared another similar animation of Debussy’s Clair de Lune. If you haven’t seen Malinowski’s mesmerizing “music animation machine”, I highly recommend it!
Enjoy and share!

My Chic Maternity Clothes for Stylish Moms blogpost was so popular that I decided to write another post dedicated to Isabella Oliver, my favorite maternity clothing line.  Their Autumn/Winter 2013 collection just debuted this week and it’s full of beautiful, chic, ready-to-wear fashion that is as flattering as it is functional.  There is something for everyone- casual chic daytime wear, sexy evening dresses, jackets and accessories, and work clothes that you’ll want to keep wearing long after you’ve left the office.  As I’ve mentioned before, one of the best things about the Isabella Oliver brand is that their clothing is conveniently marked with a lettering system to let you know if the clothing can be worn post-pregnancy. Such a simple detail that sets this site apart from others. Here’s what to look for:

P- PREGNANT perfect during pregnancy
A- AFTER nursing or just after birth
F- FOREVER wear even when not pregnant

I put together a collection of my favorite pieces from the Autumn/Winter line. Click links above the pictures to view the items on the Isabella Oliver site. There are so many gorgeous dresses, tops, and pants available that it was hard narrowing down a selection so make sure to keep looking once you’ve clicked through to the site!

I created this listening activity for our kids classes at TLB Music. The idea is to have children listen to three classical pieces of music, creating music-inspired art along with them, trying to capture the feel of each piece. We use crayons in class, but you can use a pencil, colored pens, markers, or whatever you’d like! The only information you need to give them before listening is the name of the piece, the composer and his country of origin, and the small talking points listed. When they’re done listening and completing their art, kids can cut out their three drawings to play the game. See if they can recall what each piece sounds like when you play shorts excerpts for them!

{About the Photo}

On August 14, 1945, when the surrender of Japan was announced in the United States, ending World War II, everyone took to the the streets to celebrate. In Times Square, a photographer named Alfred Eisenstaedt was taking pictures of the spontaneous scene and spotted a young sailor running around kissing every woman he could find. Just south of 45th street, the man grabbed a nurse and Alfred captured the moment of their kiss, with the intersection of Broadway and Seventh in the background. The photo, entitled V-J Day in Times Square, was published a week later in a Life magazine spread and become one of the most iconic images of the era.

Did you know that another view of the same kiss was published in the New York Times? This one is called Kissing the War Goodbye, taken by photo journalist Victor Jorgensen:

Today, I’m getting close to finishing TLB Music‘s Fall curriculum! Finally! I love this one: students will be “traveling” to a new country each week to meet its music and culture. Our teachers and pianists are definitely going to be working hard playing so many styles of music- Argentine Tango, Nigerian Highlife, Austrian Waltz, Brazilian Bossa Nova and more! I’m surrounded by stacks of sheet music and instruments, and am slowly…very slowly…scanning it all in to make it digital and snapped this photo to share.

Hope you’re having a great evening!
